Evaluating succession planning software
At minimum: a way to define what each critical role requires, scoring of candidates against those criteria rather than against each other, readiness windows that say when someone could actually take the role, development actions with owners and dates, and a record of why every score changed. Anything that only stores names and job titles is an org chart, not succession planning. The record of reasoning is the part most tools skip and the part that makes a plan defensible to a board.
An HRIS succession module is one feature inside a system built for payroll, records, and core HR, so it usually covers storing a successor list well and calibration, scenario modeling, and audit trails less well. Dedicated succession planning software does the opposite: it assumes your HRIS already owns the employee record and focuses on the judgment layer on top of it. The practical test is whether the tool can tell you why a rating changed eighteen months later.

SuccessionStack does not try to replace your HRIS; it imports the roster by CSV upsert, 2,000 rows at a time, and keeps the scoring, readiness, and scenario work separate from your system of record. A REST API is on the roadmap, without a committed date yet, so CSV is the integration path today.
Each role gets a profile made of weighted leadership dimensions, and candidates are scored against that profile rather than ranked against each other. Scoring against fixed criteria produces gaps you can act on, where head-to-head ranking mostly produces politics. SuccessionStack ships with 8 dimensions, lets you rename, hide, reorder, or reweight them per role, and requires a reason before a score change saves.
A first usable view in 1 to 2 weeks: import the roster, choose the dimensions and weights, and the bench renders immediately. A full rollout with review workflow, manager training, and scenario modeling typically takes 4 to 8 weeks. That timeline assumes an organization of roughly 50 to 5,000 employees with at least one succession or talent-review process already running.
