vs BambooHR
BambooHR runs your HRIS. SuccessionStack runs your bench.
BambooHR is a solid HRIS for small and mid-market teams. Its succession feature is a text field next to a name. If you need actual bench depth, readiness scoring, and what-if analysis, that's a different tool, and these two run together without conflict.

These tools don't compete. BambooHR handles HR records, time off, onboarding, and payroll. SuccessionStack handles succession. Most customers keep BambooHR as their system of record and export a CSV into SuccessionStack once a quarter.
When BambooHR is enough
- You're under 50 people and succession planning means knowing who covers what when someone's out. A note in BambooHR does that.
- You don't have a formal succession process yet. BambooHR's basic fields are fine for orgs that haven't started thinking about bench depth.
- Your HR team is focused on recruiting, onboarding, and compliance. Succession is a year-two problem. BambooHR covers year one well.
When you need SuccessionStack
- You have a board or exec team asking for a written succession plan. BambooHR can't produce one. SuccessionStack can, with the scoring rationale attached.
- You're running talent reviews. BambooHR has no structured review workflow. SuccessionStack has one, with facilitator scheduling, dimension scoring, and a PDF output.
- You need to model what happens if two or three key people leave at once. That's SuccessionStack's what-if cascade analysis. BambooHR has nothing close.
- Your scoring needs to be auditable. Every score change in SuccessionStack is logged. In BambooHR, a text field change is invisible.
The setup most BambooHR customers land on
Stay with BambooHR only if
- You're under 50 people and succession is informal; a person and a note is enough
- No board-level review of succession plans is happening yet
- You don't run structured talent reviews with scored outputs
Add SuccessionStack if
- You need a real bench view: who's ready now, who's 12 months out, where you have gaps
- Your board, exec team, or auditors want to see the succession plan with scoring attached
- You run talent reviews and need structured scoring, not free-text notes
- You need to model departure scenarios without rebuilding the whole spreadsheet every time
See where your bench breaks before it matters.
